Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and is on the verge of becoming the largest sport in New Zealand secondary schools. Auckland is at the epicentre of that growth in basketball and we are reinforcing our team to support growth. 

We are seeking a full-time permanent Officer to take responsibility for growing basketball participation through the development of Clubs and supporting schools, while driving engagement and participation in basketball for local communities.  This role will be focused on Waitakere-West Auckland, though it will occasionally work on group projects across Auckland.


Reporting to the Manager, Community Basketball, this role is responsible for identifying new opportunities that will result in the growth of the game.

Your key areas of responsibility and accountability will be:

  • Planning and implementing activities either directly or in conjunction with local Clubs, including oversight and direction of a pool of (paid) Community Coaches
  • Identifying those individuals who are capable of growing engagement and participation in local community basketball
  • Contributing to and supporting the creation of an annual calendar across all programmes and levels of development
  • Work with secondary and primary schools to develop school basketball participation
  • Assist with the development of high quality, sustainable programmes of support
  • Ensure the execution of funded programmes in accordance with funding requirements


  • A degree in sports management plus 3 to 5 years management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the community sporting landscape
  • An ability to seek out opportunities for improvement through new ideas, approaches, or insights
  • A high level of motivation and the ability to engage and motivate others to achieve outcomes
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage with key stakeholders, develop and sustain positive relationships with Clubs, and build wide and effective networks of contacts inside and outside the organisation
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a small, dynamic team
  • A sense of responsibility for implementing agreed plans and strategies with a strong financial awareness
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and other sports related software
  • Previous experience developing opportunities for Women and Girls will be highly regarded – please highlight that experience when applying.
